About Tails of Service – Your Passion, Your Resource
Like many others, James experienced a service dog’s transformative power. Austin wasn’t just a loyal companion; he was a guardian angel, a silent confidant, and a beacon of hope in times of darkness. Their journey together unveiled the profound depths of the connection between humans and service dogs.
With this deep understanding, James felt an intense desire to extend a helping hand to those seeking to understand and appreciate these incredible animals better. He envisioned a resource where knowledge, passion, and love for service dogs could be shared with the world.
And so, Tails of Service came into being. Our website is more than just a collection of information; it’s a testament to the journey of countless service dog handlers or those planning to get one, a tribute to the unwavering love between humans and their service dogs.
Through Tails of Service, we are dedicated to enriching lives, creating awareness, and supporting those who wish to explore the remarkable wonder of service dogs. We want to inspire others to share in the journey we’ve experienced—a journey of love, companionship, and the tireless work these incredible animals do on behalf of their handlers.
We invite you to become a part of our community, explore the dynamic stories we share, and let us be your trusted resource on the path to discovering the incredible service dogs of your own.
A Message From The Author
Hi! I’m James Carter, author of Tails of Service, a blog dedicated to service dog handlers and anyone interested in learning about the service dog industry.
Did you know that humans first began training and domesticating wild wolves 15,000 years ago. The earliest evidence of canines used in service was found in the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum, where murals illustrated a visually impaired man being led by his dog.
Today, service dogs assist people with various disabilities including autism, epilepsy, physical and hearing impairments, and psychosocial conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, and many others.
Dogs are kind, loving, and compassionate animals. They are faithful companions, forgive our faults, and have the enviable ability to stay in the present moment. It is undeniable dogs teach us to be better human beings. Perhaps that is what I love most about Austin, my beautiful Lab/Golden service dog.
Austin helps me to maintain my independence by assisting with the daily challenges of living with cerebral palsy. This includes tasks many take for granted—opening/closing doors, doing laundry, switching lights on and off, and fetching my phone and shoes.
Austin is a true friend; he listens to and comforts me. We have an inseparable bond, and his presence improves my quality of life.
His unquestioned love helped to inspire Tails of Service, which provides an outlet for me to indulge a love of writing and reporting dating back to my college days while also helping others to learn about these incredible animals.
At Tails of Service, you won’t find any product pitches or fundraising asks, just well-researched, fact-driven articles written by a certified Service dog owner and handler with a blogging and journalism background. Topics include the difference between guide dogs, mobility dogs, and medical alert dogs; training dos and don’ts; and even some provocative prose addressing the dangers of fake service dogs.
Yes, counterfeit canines are a thing!
Regardless of what brought you here, I’m so happy you’ve stopped by. Let’s make a difference together!
Kind Regards,
James
Letter From Our Pastor
Ms. Shannon Barbour,
I’m writing you briefly today to commend James Carter for the work he’s done educating our church about service dogs and the work of Canine Companions. Over the last 6 months, he has presented to 4 different adult Sunday School classes and our children’s ministry, sharing with each of them about the importance of service dogs, how they are trained, and how to interact with them. Each class has told me how much they enjoyed the presentation and how much they learned from the experience. The kids, especially, loved their visit with Austin!
James comes across as patient, genuine and passionate about the mission of Canine Companions. He’s always available and eager to share about the work with others. If you have any volunteer needs in your organization, particularly talking to groups about service dogs, he will do a tremendous job for you. If you have any questions about the work James has done for our church, you are more than welcome to contact me with the information listed below. I hope you have a wonderful week.
Regards,
Brandon McCarroll, Pastor
